Mason Celebrates the launch of Patriot BikeShare

George Mason University to Celebrate Alternative Transportation at Patriot BikeShare Launch

On Tuesday, November 27 at 12:00 P.M., the Department of Parking and Transportation will be hosting a launch celebration at the Johnson Center’s North Plaza for Patriot BikeShare, Mason’s new bike-sharing program.

Patriot BikeShare was launched earlier this year by the Department of Parking and Transportation in partnership with Atlanta-based VIA Cycle, a company that specializes in bike-sharing programs. The program has 20 bicycles located at four stations throughout the Fairfax campus.

According to an article in the Washington Post, Patriot BikeShare was funded by a $36,000 grant from the Patriot Green Fund, a board made up of students, faculty and staff that distribute money from a dedicated fund to support sustainability projects.

According to Tyler Orton, Bicycle Programs Director at the Department of Parking and Transportation, Patriot BikeShare has surpassed initial usage expectations.

“Our goal for the first semester was to have a hundred users, and we’re already three months ahead of that,” Orton said in an interview with the Washington Post. “We’ve had 500 usages. . . . Currently, we have 20 bikes, and the intent is to expand as soon as we can.”

The November 27 launch celebration will feature test-rides of Patriot BikeShare bicycles, giveaways and prizes. Members of the Department of Parking and Transportation will be available to answer questions about the program.

Patriot BikeShare works similarly to Capital BikeShare, the popular bike-sharing system in place throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area. Members can join on line, and pay a monthly fee of $6 with the first two hours of each ride free. Each hour thereafter costs an additional fee, depending on the length of time a bicycle is checked out. More information about Patriot BikeShare is available at
