The George Mason University Student Government would like to welcome Dr. Wu to the Mason family! SG is excited for the opportunity to work with Dr. Wu in his new role as Provost of George Mason! Congratulations, Dr. Wu, and welcome!
Below is the email sent by President Cabrera to the Mason Community announcing Dr. Wu as the new provost.
“Dear Fellow Patriot,
I am delighted to share some exciting news: Dr. David Wu will be the next provost at George Mason University.
Dr. Wu has spent the past 27 years at Lehigh University. There, he rose through the ranks to become the dean of the Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, one of the nation’s finest engineering schools. He’s a first-rate engineer and scholar. But what I admire most about Dr. Wu is his vision. He understands that to build a great university in today’s competitive marketplace, you must think big and remove conventional boundaries.
As dean over the past 10 years, Dr. Wu did just that. He worked with the Lehigh community to change the way people approach the study of engineering. In his view, engineering isn’t simply a career track; it’s the foundation of a 21st century education. He led the development of several multidisciplinary programs, which combined engineering with business or arts and science degrees. Equipped with both technical and analytical skills, today’s engineering students become tomorrow’s leaders in a wide range of disciplines – from business, law, medicine, public policy, design, and of course, engineering.
Dr. Wu has been a forward-thinker his whole career. He has studied, taught and worked on several continents over the past 15 years. And he has partnered with the National Science Foundation to create a doctoral program that required students to participate in an international internship. He knows that student must be thinking globally if they want to compete in today’s job market.
We are indeed fortunate to have Dr. Wu join us. I would like to thank Mills Kelly and all the members of the Provost Search Committee he chaired for their service. Because of their commitment, the process was thoughtful, thorough and inclusive, resulting in the selection of a highly qualified and talented academic leader.
Dr. Wu’s arrival will be a smooth transition thanks to the steady and dedicated leadership of Dr. Peter Stearns, who is stepping down this summer. I’m happy to say that Dr. Peter Stearns will be staying here with us and going back to doing what he loves most – writing, teaching and shaping the next generation of great thinkers.
I am confident that Dr. Wu will bring to Mason the kind of innovative and entrepreneurial talents for which we are known, as well as inspirational leadership for our academic units.
Please join me in welcoming your new provost, Dr. Wu.
