Elections
Applications for the Fall 2009 election for Freshmen & Transfer Students interested in Student Senate are now being accepted. We have summarized the information below, but please consult Title VI of the Code of Student Governance (file available near bottom of page) for details. Good luck!
As a Student Senator, you will be an advocate for the student body on issues like academic advising, on-campus dining, parking, diversity, and lots more. There are 30 available seats each year, and all students may vote for any candidate. Please note that as a Student Senator, you must be able to make meetings of the full Senate every Thursday 4:30-7:00pm and at least one additional weekly committee meeting.
As Student Body President/Vice President, you will be the face of Student Government to students and administrators. You will shape the direction of the organization for the next academic year and invigorate the student body with your projects and initiatives. Please note that these are very intensive positions that will require extensive time, patience, and enthusiasm.
How to File for Candidacy
- Pick up a candidacy packet from the Office of Student Activities (SUB I, Room 101) or print them using the links below.
- Collect 150 unique signatures from currently enrolled students, along with their G-numbers to verify (300 combined for candidates for President/Vice President). NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you collect some extras in order to ensure you have at least 150 valid signatures and G-numbers. You must also have a faculty/staff member sign their name and G-number to attest to your candidacy.
- Submit your completed packet (candidacy form and signature sheets) to the Office of Student Activities (SUB I, Room 101).
- After and only after the EDC contacts you to confirm the validity of your candidacy packet, you may begin publicly campaigning.
Candidacy Requirements
- All officers, representatives, and appointees of Student Government shall maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average determined by the Registrar of a 2.000 and must be a registered student during their semesters of involvement
- Undergraduate students who wish to hold a position in Student Government must be registered for a minimum of nine credit hours.
- Graduate students who wish to hold a position in Student Government must be registered for a minimum of six credit hours.

- September 9, 2009 – Elections ackets available for pickup in the Office of Student Activities, SUB I, Room 101 or online here
- September 18, 2009 by 5PM – deadline to turn in completed Election Packets in the Office of Student Activities, SUB I, Room 101
- September 30, 2009 @ 12:01AM – Campaigning may commence
- October 13 – October 14, 2009 – Elections held, from Oct 13, 12:01AM to Oct 14, 11:59PM
- October 15, 2009 @ 12:30PM – Election results announced in the Johnson Center Atrium
- October 16, 2009 by 11:59PM – All election paraphernalia must be removed
Spring 2009 Senate & President/VP Student Elections – Important Dates
- March 16, 2009 – Elections Packets available for pickup in the Office of Student Activities, SUB I, Room 101 or online at www.sg.gmu.edu
- March 27, 2009 by 5PM – deadline to turn in completed Election Packets in the Office of Student Activities, SUB I, Room 101
- March 30, 2009 @ 12:01AM – Campaigning may commence
- March 31, 2009 – First candidate meeting with the EDC
- April 2, 2009 @ 6:30PM – Elections and Disputes Commission sanctioned Student Body Presidential and Vice Presidential Debate in the Johnson Center Atrium
- April 13, 2009 – Second candidate meeting with the EDC
- April 14 – April 15, 2009 – Elections are held beginning at 12:01AM on April 14th and ending at 11:59PM on April 15, 2009
- April 16, 2009 @ 12:30PM – Election results are announced in the Johnson Center Atrium
- April 17, 2009 by 11:59PM – All election paraphernalia must be removed
