Tips + Student Testimonials

Put Yourself Out There

Alumni – First-Gen Student now Special Agent Junul D. Smith

“When giving any tips for first year students at Mason, especially first-gen students a few things come to mind. First thing is to have an open mind! No matter where you are from you will meet many amazing people from all over! Secondly, find something on campus you like to do, whether it be join a club, a job on campus, or just walking around, having a way to just spend time doing what you like makes adjusting in your first year much more fun. And finally, try to make friends! I was able to build what I hope are lifelong friendships at Mason and they made my time there the best of my life!”

Getting Comfortable

Anonymous Testimonial from First-Generation Student

“One thing that really helped me navigate the complexities of college in the US was building connections with my fellow students. Creating that support network allowed me to be more comfortable at Mason and really helped me find my niche.”

Find Your Community

Anonymous Testimonial from Senior at George Mason University

“As a first generation student, college was a new, uncertain experience for me. When it came to navigating my way through the first semester, I felt lost and doubted my own abilities, that is until I joined student organizations on campus that helped me nourish my identity. Most of the time college is considered a place to get a diploma but it’s also important to connect with people to build a support system, feel empowered to live boldly, and make college years more enjoyable. My biggest piece of advice is to set aside fear and put yourself out there and find communities that help you be the best version of yourself because you may end up in places that you may have never imagined.”

Taking Advantage

“Embrace being uncomfortable, it’s part of growth. Use LinkedIn to your advantage, and remember that being kind to others can open doors. Sub 1 was incredibly helpful for me, and your professors are a valuable resource for career opportunities and guidance.”
