What is the BOV?
In the Commonwealth of Virginia, public institutions of higher education Board of Visitors are made up of 16 members who are appointed by the Governor of Virginia on a rotating basis to serve a four-year term. The board is a corporate body serving under the leadership of a rector, vice rector, and secretary. The BOV exercises its authority principally in policy-making and oversight. These appointments are typically uncontested and unpolitical. The BOV has the right to approve or deny all financial decisions, fire any employee in the University, and determine the long-term vision of the University. The Board of Visitors is the most important entity at George Mason.
